Artistic self expression was promoted in a wonderful high school competition organized by the Alumni Association in April of 2007. Students were encouraged to use any medium to express what they felt expressed their "Armenian-ness". Two seperate categories, "Show Us" and "Tell Us", were created to allow students to explore painting, writing, videography and many other forms of expression and compete for cash prize scholarships. Over $2500 in prizes were awarded to eight students. We hope to make it an annual event!

Avak Avakian ('96) was a young, talented artist when in 1997 a car accident left him disabled and unable to do what he loved, to draw and paint. His former art instructor at MDS, Raffi Hadidian ('90) conceived the idea of exhibiting his work to the community who had lost touch with him since his tragic accident. That concept evolved into NERG 2007. On May 19, 2007, over 250 people attended a unique art exhibition of 14 young, Armenian artists, including Avak. The Lurie Gallery in Studio City was packed with the curious and connosieurs of art. Live DJ music set the tone for a magical evening whose goal was to offer an opportunity for these young artists to display their talents and to raise money for the new MDS Alumni Association Avak Avakian Art Scholarship fund. This scholarship will award, starting in 2007, a graduating senior who has excelled artistically .
